Terrence McNally has enjoyed a remarkably far-ranging career spanning six decades, and his contributions to theatre are celebrated worldwide. In 2018, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, further solidifying his legacy. A recipient of the Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lucille Lortel Lifetime Achievement Award, McNally has won four Tony Awards for his outstanding plays, including Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class, as well as for his musical books for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime.
His prolific writing includes a number of TV scripts, notably "Andre's Mother," for which he won an Emmy Award. McNally's accolades also include two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Grant, four Drama Desk Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Obie Awards, and three Hull-Warriner Awards from the Dramatists Guild. In 1996, he was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
In addition to his notable works, McNally wrote the libretto for the operas Great Scott and Dead Man Walking, both with music by Jake Heggie. Robert Chevara is an internationally-acclaimed, multi award-winning artist, writer, and director whose work extends across opera, film, and theatre. He has penned several opera libretti and a recent poetry collection, and has had a book published by the Bloomsbury Press. Furthermore, Robert is actively engaged in political discourse as well as visual and performance art. His directorial ventures include notable venues such as The Old Vic Theatre, The Charing Cross Theatre, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and The San Francisco Opera. Notably, he has also directed productions at The Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, The Bridge Theatre in London, and The Soho Theatre. His repertoire features seminal works by Shakespeare, including the revival of Antony and Cleopatra that received great acclaim last Autumn at The Glory, London. Additionally, Robert has directed productions of Frankie and Johnny by Terrence McNally, and has made a mark in cities like Brussels, Berlin, and St. Petersburg. Romanian born sound artist and musician Ioana Mandrescu completed her studies in her home country, France, and Belgium, where she now resides and works in Brussels. She is a graduate of the EPAS programme in Ghent.
Mandrescu is the founding member of two contemporary music groups: Quivir Ensemble, alongside flautist Diana Muela Mora and clarinetist and conductor Jose Fernandez Camacho, and Opia Ensemble, with cellist Aleksandra Pykacz. Strongly influenced by choreography and painting, she has developed performances that blend sound, film, and dance. These performances have been showcased in Belgium at venues like Bozar Opening Night and Festival Courants d'Airs, as well as in Poland during the FAMA Festival, and in Iran at the First Edition of the Contemporary Music Festival in Tehran.
As a sound artist, she has participated in group exhibitions at Gouvernement and KASK in Ghent. Mandrescu has also performed live sets at events such as MixTree in Amsterdam, Atlantikwall Nocturne in Oostende, La Senne in Brussels, and Onder Stroom in Antwerp. She was a resident at Q-O2 and iMAL in Brussels.
She gained recognition as an emerging female composer when featured on The Word Radio series FAIR_PLAY, and her pieces are included in various international sound art compilations. Additionally, she is a founding member of the COM(E)PULSIVE platform for sound art. Beyond her individual work, Mandrescu frequently collaborates with numerous Belgian and international artists.
In 2022, she contributed to The Conscious Effort Fort exhibition conceived by Belgian artist David Bergé at Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp. Since 2020, she has been collaborating with Norwegian artist Kjersti G. Andvig; their first joint work, The Two Seasons, created with the Royal Burundian drummers Ikiyago Legacy, premiered in 2022 at CC Muze in Heusden Zolder, Belgium.
Mandrescu also collaborated with Syrian director Eyas Al-Mokdad as a sound designer for the installation and theatre play Unfolding the Body (Women of Troy), which was presented in Brussels at ZSenne Art Lab in July 2023 and KVS Box in October 2023.
She is often requested to record performances of other artists, including Raffaella Crispino and Stijn Demeulenaere. In addition, Mandrescu teaches sound art, music, and sound for film. She was involved in the UNESCO project Reviving the Spirit of Mosul, which took place in Iraq during 2021 and 2022.
At the core of her work are the human body and human-produced sounds and their impact on the world. She collects discarded objects, stories, and medical data from various organs, focusing particularly on the heart. As a sound recordist, she consistently updates her personal database of man-made sounds, which serve as building blocks for her sound pieces and installations.
Ioana Mandrescu continues to make waves in contemporary sound art, much like the impactful works found at The Bridge Theatre, and is often compared to the themes explored in plays like Frankie and Johnny by Terrence McNally. Jessie is a Hull based lighting designer known for their work in various productions, including the acclaimed 'Frankie and Johnny' by Terrence McNally. They are also the associate lighting designer for The Roaring Girls and were recognized as an ALPD Lumiere (2020).
