In 2024 we were honored to receive a grant from the Brussels-Capital Region which enabled us to offer free workshops to connect the teenagers of Brussels through drama-based exercises in a project called BeTheBridge.
BeTheBridge was designed for students aged between 13 and 18 years old and aimed to activate students' English while also connecting them to others in their peer group from a different school.
During the project two schools from different language communities were matched for 2 hours long workshops, which took place at one of the participating schools.
BeTheBridge received incredibly positive and warm reactions from both teaching staffs and participants, and we are so proud to be able to use theatre to bring Brussels closer together.
"It was such a nice way to expose students to spoken English, have them try to understand the teacher/actor and to interact with other students who don't always speak the same language as you. It was a unique opportunity to act/use your body and your English through fun and a different type of activities."
"I loved the idea behind the workshop from the start – giving my students an opportunity to escape their everyday classroom environment and socialise with peers while practicing English. I knew joining the project would also give me an opportunity to meet wonderful teachers and get inspired by the activities practiced during the sessions.
After the two workshops, there was overwhelmingly positive feedback from the students - they enjoyed visiting a new school, meeting new students, working with the workshop leaders, doing the exercises.
Students and I would happily participate again and we hope to see more schools do so as well in the future."
