A struggling composer faces turning 30, fading dreams, and big choices in this thrilling musical by RENT creator Jonathan Larson.
14 October - 2 November
Stassart House, Rue du Stassart 34, 1050, Ixelles
tick, tick… BOOM! is a raw and deeply human musical by Jonathan Larson, the creator of the musical theatre smash hit RENT. It’s 1990 in New York City, and Jon is on the brink of turning 30. He’s waiting tables while trying to finish the musical he believes could change everything. But time is running out—and life isn’t waiting. His girlfriend wants to leave the city for a quieter life, his best friend is thriving in a corporate job, and Jon is stuck in between: stay and risk everything for a dream that may never come true, or walk away before it’s too late.
This semi-autobiographical story pulses with ambition, fear, and the relentless pressure of unrealized potential. Fueled by a driving rock score and Larson’s unmistakable voice, tick, tick… BOOM! isn’t just a musical— it's a gripping, exhilarating dive into the countdown to a breakthrough, or a breakdown.

Jonathan David Larson (1960 – 1996) was an American composer, lyricist and playwright, most famous for writing the musicals RENT and tick, tick...BOOM!, which explored social issues such as multiculturalism, homophobia and substance use disorder. Larson had worked on both musicals throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s. After several years of workshopping, RENT began an off-Broadway run in early 1996, though Larson passed away unexpectedly the day before its first preview performance. The show went on to enjoy critical and commercial success, and transferred to Broadway that April, one of the longest-running Broadway productions. Larson posthumously received three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Tick, Tick... Boom! received it's first off-Broadway production in 2001 and was adapted to a film in 2021. RENT was also adapted into a film in 2005.

Originating from the North East of England, Mal initially trained as performer, gaining a degree in Musical Theatre from Arts Educational Schools London. After graduating, Mal decided to concentrate on a career as a Musical Director, and quickly began working as a rehearsal/audition pianist and vocal coach in London, whilst also teaching at ArtsEd and Emil Dale Academy. Since 2018, Mal has been the resident Musical Director for the English Theatre Frankfurt, conducting every performance of Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, and Young Frankenstein, and from 2022 also took on the role of Musical Supervisor for Sister Act, Something Rotten!, and Nunsense.
